-male
-african american
-born in 1930′s, Kentucky
-one of 8 children, 6th child
-after 8th grade, worked with father in the fields
-wanted to join the navy, later became cook for them
- later became interesting in deep sea diving
-in 1954, allowed to go to diving school
-got notes at diving school saying "we are going to drown you"
-thought about quitting deep sea diving due to the people making fun of him
-later graduated and finally became a diver
-goal was to become a master diver
-pipe on the diving ship hit him, injured his leg
-leg had to be amputated
-got help from a navy attorney
-became the first leg amputated diver
-retired from navy in 1970′s

    Carl Maxie Brashear (January 19, 1931 – July 25, 2006) was the first African American to become a U.S. Navy Master Diver in 1970. In 2000, Brashear’s military service was portrayed by Cuba Gooding, Jr. in the film Men of Honor.

    His name was Carl Brashear.

    Cuba Gooding Jr. portrayed him in the movie "Men of Honor."
