The vessel was salvaged by Russian Divers after the War. They did a lot of cutting and blasting disbursing much of the contents, including skeletal remains. Sea Water is calcium deficient and bones don’t last too long. That being said, the Baltic has much fresh water and low salinity so I am certain that the remains of many of the victims still rest in the inner hull. Out of respect for the dead we did not do penetration dives and did not film any human remains

And trust the russians to salvage what they sink (one day maybe i too will dive some of these great wrecks)

The wreck is in 140 to 160 ft. of water approx. location is 55.07N 17.41 E. The wreck is in three connected sections. The bow on its port side stands proud as does the stern which sits nearly upright. The midsection has been blasted open by Russian salvage divers and is flattend with very little profile.

The Russian divers has destroyed much of the ship with their careless dives. No respect for the dead. Russia can go to hell for all i care.

@jbd210947 HI i that was a greater loss of life in the sinking Wilhelm Gustloff. Than titanic? is this true i also heard heard that the Wilhelm Gustloff was intently sunk by thr germans in ww2?

@Sooksawaspakdee961  Why should the Russians respect a Nazi ship named after a Nazi politician. They were at war, and the Russians were fighting a common enemy of civilization. Why should their divers show respect either? And by the way, Nazis consider Thai people animals.

@nordennorsk This was a refugee ship and was sailing under these identifications. This was not a military action ship. Like someone wrote it was like sinking 6000 US civilians for what they did in Vietnam.

Wilhelm Gustloff, Thielbek, General ??? and Cap Arcona were for years non-happenings. These all are the worst kind of war crimes of all times, but done by those who won to write the history.

@TheDegree777 no, the ship contained evacuated german civilians and was torpedoed by a soviet submarine. and yes, there was a greater loss of life than on the titanic. titanic = ca. 1500 people dead ; wilhelm gustloff = ca. 9400 (!).

This is a kind of odd question. In underwater footage there are always thousands of things floating by, it almost looks like snow. What is it?

How did you get the permit to dive at the wreck?

It took a long while, we finally received the permit from the Polish National Museum.
We used their research vessel as the dive platform. we were under contract to them and they got copies of all our footage for use in the museum.

Shooting for National Geographic helps in negotiations.

The death-toll of this wreck was and still is horrific, but for god’s sake (no pun intended) keep your preaching to yourself, it didn’t help these guys and it won’t help you.
