Diving the Valiant – Catalina Island

Diving on the Valiant in Avalon Harbor, Catalina Island. She rests upright on the bottom, with her stern at about 70 feet, and bow at nearly 110 feet.

When I dove this wreck in 1993, there was considerably more of the structure remaining. Looks like in another 10-20 years she will just be a high patch of junk.

Awesome. Looks like you had good vis that day, too. I hope to get out and dive Catalina sometime in the near future!

I grew up on Catalina and was one of the first L.A. County certified divers back in ’62. I later worked as a diver for Hansen Mooring Service at Avalon. We maintained all the moorings in Avalon harbor and Descanso bay. We also did salvage work. In 1968 we removed all the brass fittings off of the Valiant. I personally removed the hatch ring from the bow anchor locker access hatch. It was solid brass and very heavy. I later donated it to the Catalina Museum. The Valiant hull was intact then.
