Can Anyone Give Me a Crash Coarse on Deep Sea Diving.?

My friend invited me on a diving expedition. He told me that I should learn the basics prior to leaving on the 30th of Jan. We tried out some gear that he let me borrow at his pool. I spent about one hour and got quite comfortable at it. He says just a few more times and I will be ready. My wife says that I am crazy to go with him. I know she is saying this because of the tv shows she watches and the because she gossips with her friends. Plus I trust my friend. Please share any information with me if you have any valuable advise.

Not a good idea. Your pal , if he’s ever found out, will be kicked out of any club he belongs to as well.
Diving is statistically safe, but so is flying your own plane. If you didn’t take flying lessons, your chances of living during that first flight, are just like diving without proper training. Not good.
There’s much more to learn than diving to the bottom of an 8 foot pool and swimming around in no current. Things go wrong. I’ve never been on a dive yet, that has actually gone exactly as planned. Nothing is perfect. Medical complications from a DCS hit aren’t something you can walk away from either. Will your wife stay with a vegetable or someone wheel chair bound if you take a hit and are lucky enough to still be breathing? That can happen if you don’t ascend correctly and it takes the chopper awhile to get you to a chamber.
You can go to a local dive shop and for an investment of 3 evenings in class, one evening doing confined water dives (pool) and a Saturday morning doing 2 open water dives, you can have your open water cert, allowing you to dive anywhere on the planet to a depth of 60 feet and not in any overhead environments. That is just about every decent reef there is on the planet. None are really deeper than that. Total cost, usually about 200 bucks for the course. You can always steal, beg or borrow the rest of the gear, especially once you’re certified. Even then, having that card will let you rent just about anything you need as well as fill your tanks.
Take a course, learn the proper way, live to dive another day.

Go get PADI training and certification. If you want to follow your friends advise, make sure your Will is up to date. Diving is a fun and safe sport when done properly.

Most reputable diving companies will require you to have a C-card, a diving certification card like a driver’s license. Get proper training. Diving is not inherently dangerous but it has dangers you need to be aware of and things you need to practice. Open water and pool diving are very different. You’ve got 5 weeks – that’s plenty of time to take a PADI or NAUI course. Your friend is nuts and your wife is absolutely correct. Get trained, it may save your life.
