i was lucky enough to work on the travelling titanic exhibit when it came to the museum where i work,i dressed up as margaret "molly" brown and others.this exhibit came about a year and a half after i faced a family tragedy.a violent death of one i loved dearly.while portraying those who survived the ship’s sinking,i felt inspired by their faith and courage in putting their lives together, and in the various ways several heroes rose to the challenge of facing almost certain death.its hard to put it all in words, but their courage, and the fact that titanic brought home to me the reality that i wasnt alone-so many people,in many ways-have faced and overcome various tragedies and losses.also, portraying a character as upbeat as molly brown,i felt "buoyed" up(bad pun, sorry!)in attitude, its hard to pretend to be her and not smile!i had the priveledge of meeting her gr8-granddaughter,who came to the exhibit,as charming and vivacious as her famous relative.during this exhibit,i felt so much improved that i got out into the real world again, and met the man who later became my husband.its ironic that a ship, known for sorrow and loss, brought such gr8 healing to my life.oddly, this is the second time titanic saved me-about the time ballard found the ship,i lost my grandmother.the story of ballards exploration fscinated me at the time, and gave me a break from my grief.some people, including ballard, think the titanic should have remained undisturbed, and i understand the sentiment.but the artifacts brought up to view, gave a feeling of connection with those who witnessed the event, those who lived and those who died.so many who saw it were touched and moved deeply,as it reminded us of not only those long-lost people, but also somehow of personal losses, and particularly of the losses of 9/11.it gave us a connection to all who suffered, all who ied,and most importantly, those who lost all they loved, but who somehow went on to live and love again.i know i owe a gr8 deal of healing to the stories told by the relics of the titanic.
